Can't avoid the elephant in the room:
Hasn't it been posited that Neal Adams + Steve Ditko = JB?

Yes, that makes sense-- but I think it's even more accurate to get Jack Kirby into the math.

When Neal did a Batman/Creeper story, the Creeper looked like Ditko inked by Adams might look -- but it didn't really look like John Byrne.

This example of Neal Adams inking Jack Kirby kinda looks like John Byrne (maybe?).

Jack Kirby + Neal Adams <> John Byrne doing Kirby

I read CONAN #121 this morning and could not figure out who
the artist was. There are no credits on the issue. After
reading it the internet told me it was John Buscema inked
by Bob McLeod! Might be a reason there were no credits.
I'm guessing very loose layouts by Buscema finished by a
young McLeod.

I enjoy Bob McLeod's work a lot, but it generally seems to me that anyone + Bob McLeod = Bob McLeod.

It's kind of funny, isn't it, Mark? If you like the inker then you enjoy their imprint. If not, then it's overbearing and hard to overlook and enjoy the work.
Bob Wiacek on JRJr used to drive me crazy, but Dan Green over his pencils was a delight.

That's also a function of "casting" as JB put it, and Dan Green is a great example. I couldn't take his work over Jim Lee, but it was great on JRJr and JB.

Same with Klaus Janson - didn't like him on JB but does wonders on JRjr (him again) and Miller.

Then there's Joe Rubenstein who I've felt had an averaging effect on artists. He can make a '4' penciller look like a '7' but unfortunately (IMO) makes a '10' penciller look like a '7' as well.
