The death of my father is the most traumatic scar on my soul. And we were not really close. Michael, please do what you need to do for your own health, and don’t rule out counselling. My condolences.

Thank you, Peter. I'm okay, actually. He was in his 90s -- even though his first cousin last year died at 101, just being realistic, only a small percentage live that long.

My own father died in 2011, and I still experience occasional moments of muscle memory that make me want to reach for the phone when some bit of family history drifts through my mind. I’ve mentioned before that I find it amusing to think that, my father having been a Buddhist, according to what he believed there’s some fourteen year old, somewhere in the world, adding mileage to his atman. {An interesting contrast, the life of that 14 year old, and my Dad at 14 in 1934.)

I am sorry for your loss, Michael. Your father sounds amazing. My mother passed 2years ago, but I was just able to lay her remains to rest in Arlington this year (she was a nurse in Vietnam). Though she was very calm about facing her end of life and I thought all this emotion was behind me, the activity of a funeral and seeing her receive honors brought up a whole new ration of grief and (thankfully) laid it to rest. I think there is comfort in knowing people held mom in esteem.

I do the same thing with my brother, who passed in ‘20.

I lost my dad in November of 2020, to COVID. I live in Canada, but am originally from a small town south of Buffalo, NY, and so in order to see him in the hospital, I had to enter 14 days of quarantine upon returning home - confined to the basement, separated from my family for two weeks, beginning from the day he died. Considering our relationship was always somewhat strained, I’m surprised by how often I think about him.
I also lost the greatest teacher I ever had, who was also my mentor, to cancer in 2024. I miss him every single day.
