I don't whether to laugh or cry, when a big chunk of humanity seems to fall for this... every single flippin' time.

A childhood friend of mine had relatives who were convinced The Rapture was going to happen back when we were in 6th grade. It really messed with his head when it didn't, though it was a long-term messing; the kind of thing he was still writing about a decade later. I'm not someone who thinks that garden-variety religion is really bad for kids when applied gently, but something like this still feels like a form of abuse.

For what it's worth, the behaviours of America's "Religious Right" makes a lot of sense when you consider the context that they are actively trying to trigger the rapture. Why are they so cozy with Israel? Because the Book of Revelation informs them that important End Time events occur in the Valley of Armageddon, known in modern times as Jezreel Valley in northern Israel.
"Destroy the environment? Maybe I am, but environmental catastrophe was predicted, so why would we try to avoid it?"
"Israel is committing a genocide against Palestine? Maybe they are, but we need to be on their side because they control the land where stuff is going to one day happen."
I wish the simple truth was that all of those religious grifters don't believe a thing they preach, and I'm sure that's the case for some - perhaps many! - of them, but there are a lot of people who sincerely believe in all the shit they've been indoctrinated into believing, and it sure does look like they're going to get the Armageddon they want before too much longer. I'm honestly not sure if I want to still be alive to experience the schadenfreude of the harsh truths they'll have to face once they realize there will never be a "rapture," but the way these jackoffs are going, schadenfreude will be the best we can hope for.

After my pal and I went around town looking for doomsday during Y2K, I decided that after being stood up, I would refuse to answer when it finally decided to come knocking!

So glad this isn't on my radar at all. Then again, I've been among Jews pretty much exclusively the past few days, and wouldn't have been a shock if none of us had been rapt'ed up!
Tangent #1: I absolutely and wrongly assumed that JB was referencing this in the threat title.
(Tangent #2: I was strongly recommended both the novel and the TV adaptation, "The Leftovers" -- never got to either, just passing those along... no thread drift intended.)

The Gospels state that Jesus taught to "Be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" as well as "Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple."
I don't see many following this apart from Franciscan monks.
