The Baron Blood story was quite a challenge for my younger self. Frank Robbins version of the character depended in large part on his own distinctive style. When I tried to draw the character that way it came out very cartoony.

Those are two great issues in the Stern / Byrne CAPTAIN AMERICA run, but, I have always rated the Cap / Mister Hyde / Batroc two-parter slightly higher than the Baron Blood story.

Greg, I'm headed to find my copies of those issues for a reread. Thanks!

Hmmm. I do believe that the answer is ‘No’ to all of them!

Might be worth noting all of the Marvel writers he DID work with in the 70s, instead. Off the top of my head, Tony Isabella, Chris Claremont, Bill Mantlo, Jim Shooter, David Michelinie, Steven Grant, Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, Roger Stern, and Marv Wolfman.

I came close to working with Englehart at the very beginning of my career. He was writing CAPTAIN AMERICA, and was considering have Cap cross the 49th Parallel for an adventure in the Great White North. He suggested to the editor that it might be fun to have a Canadian artist pencil the issue.

I was contacted, and produced a few sample pages. Then the decision was made to go “elsewhere” with the storyline.

Those pages—at least one of which can be found online—had Cap battling Guardian in downtown Calgary (shades of things to come!) and were ultimately inked and colored by Duffy Vohland, who made Guardian’s costume orange and green “so he’s the opposite of Cap.”

Flag? What flag?

Aha, Englehart had me subliminally thinking that there was a missed opportunity there, and that was why!
