Sure.  The 70s.  I don't have the figures, but DC wasn't doing very well at all and eventually canceled a slew of titles in what is referred to as the DC Implosion.  Marvel was the dominant comic book publisher of that time, even more so than today because there were fewer independent publishers challenging them for their superhero audience.

Has Marvel ever dominated the comics market this much?

****

It's still only the biggest turd in the yard.

Edited to add-  Hey 3000!  Cool!

One of the things that really surprised me looking at the sales chart was the lack of competition from anyone outside the Big Two.  Top 10 non-Marvel/DC books for June 2009:

37. Buffy the Vampire Slayer One Shot
66. Project Superpowers Chapter 2 #0 (I've never heard of this)
78. Angel #22
84. Boys #31 (never heard of this)
91. Walking Dead #61
92. Star Wars Legacy #37
95. Boys Herogasm #2 (I don't think I want to know)
102. Barack the Barbarian
110. GI JOE #6
114. Conan the Cimmerian #11

That's a crazy list.  Something called "Herogasm" is the 7th highest selling comic not produced by Marvel or DC.  What a world.

Is it any wonder that I walked away from comics in shame.

I will cling to my memories, thank you very much. Thank the gods for Essentials...

And he's bisexual

Which would make me happy -- it's not like Marvel or DC are overflowing with LGBT characters -- but Daken just sounds dumb, dumb, dumb. I'm not terribly fond of "Skaar, Son of Hulk" as an idea either, and I (mostly) liked "Planet Hulk" and "World War Hulk." Sigh.

66. Project Superpowers Chapter 2 #0 (I've never heard of this)

Its the second mini from Dynamite Comics with a bunch of old public domain Golden Age characters.  Alex Ross is involved.  Its got the Black Terror, Catman and Kitten, the original Daredevil, etc.

84. Boys #31 (never heard of this)

95. Boys Herogasm #2 (I don't think I want to know)

Boys is Garth Ennis' superhero parody book, basically.  Its basically about a bunch of British pub-crawlers who kill superheroes who get out of line.  Think Marshall Law without the Judge Dredd elements.  Herogasm is a spinoff mini-series that's a parody of big company crossovers.

91. Walking Dead #61

I'm surprised Walking Dead is this far down.  Its the only one on that list that I regularly read, and I know its considered a big hit at Image.  Of course, there's no way to know what the real sales numbers are behind these rankings, and its also based on Direct Sales orders, not on copies sold.

All those figures really mean for sure is that LCS are stocking up their shelves with Marvel and DC.

So glad that I've all but given up on the main titles at both Marvel and DC.  Sad that I don't buy titles like Fantastic Four, X-Men, JLA, Superman, Batman, etc., but glad that I have found titles at both companies that I enjoy.  They just happen to star the ancillary characters like Ghost Rider, Simon Dark (canceled), Jonah Hex, and Iron Fist.  I still enjoy an ever decreasing number of titles with main characters like Spider-Man and Captain America, but those are few and far between.

Here's a Wolverine family tree I guess.

Apparently James Hudson and Wolverine are cousins and Wolverine has an adopted daughter and another kid with a woman named "GAHCK" which is appropriate because that's the same sound I made when I saw this family tree.

Ah, I remember Gahck.  She's from the Walt Simonson/Mike Mignola one-shot WOLVERINE: The Jungle Adventure.

I'm wondering how interesting a series about a slightly
older Wolverine (still called Logan), his wife Mariko, and
their adopted daughter Amiko would be. You'd be able to
focus on how he adapted to family life and came to terms
with his still-mysterious past.

Oh well, no merchandising opportunities there.

Of course! Didn't you know? Canada makes the Ozarks look like an empty
gene pool.
