Paulo: Damien Wayne? Batman has a son too??

+++++++++++++++

Not quite. Damien was created in a lab by Ra's Al Ghul's people using genetic material taken from Bruce and Talia. Apparently the plan was to eventually transfer the mind/soul of Ra's into Damien, but that was prevented. However, he was trained as an assassin and not only actually tried to kill Tim Drake at one point, but actually did kill the old villain The Spook....and brought his severed head back to the Batcave. If all this didn't seem bad enough....Damien is the current Robin!

Quick thoughts.

I've a baby on the way and the wife and I are having a few discussions on what comics they would be able to read once they start to read (Based on the first things I remember reading were comics). We have pretty much settled on Essentials and the copies of Marvel UK reprints I have from when I was a kid. There is no way I would let them read the current crop until they are teenagers.

Second. How is Skaar, the son of the Hulk from Planet Hulk, now grown up? Could someone answer this for me please? When I first saw the solicits for the title I assummed it was set in the future. That does not appear to be the case.

Out of touch adults trying to be hip and cool for the kids and getting it wrong.

••

You just described what seems to be a recurrent cycle in superhero comics. Certainly this was DC thru much of the Sixties and into the Seventies.

Unfortunately, the audience has always contained within it just enough readers with all the wit and sophistication of a bowl of day old Cheerios so that, coupled with the ever diminishing expectations, the Companies have been able to convince themselves that they really do know their audience. "So what if we're reaching half as many readers as we did five years ago? The ones that are left think we're coooool!!"

I don't read Marvel anymore with the exception of X-Men Forever.

In Claremont's X-Men Forever Wolverine's name is Logan. His father is Sabretooth. Claremont said we will see his mother.

Oh... and if you think about it two seconds, Mariko is still alive.

Not Wolverine though. Funeral in issue 10, drawn by Paul Smith & inked by Terry Austin (They will also do the art of #6 before that).

Stephane, are you saying they're killing off Wolverine in issue 10?

See, I'm torn here. On the one hand, i wanna buy it and frame it, hang  it on the wall.

On the other, if everyonne buys it, they won't see it as a sign that everyone wants him dead, they'll see it as the biginning of another slew of EVENTS and off they go again.

Oh, and they'll bring him back, you know they will...

 QUOTE:

I didn't leave Marvel - Marvel left me

I usually say I didn't outgrow Marvel, they outgrew me.  I didn't change, they did.  The things I wanted from the characters and stories did not change.  That is not why I currently buy no Marvel comics.

The integrity of the characters be damned, whatever services the plot or any conflict they're looking to create.  Whatever they can do to shake up that dreaded status quo.

I'm not going to make blanket statements about the entire Marvel line.  Perhaps there are good books, but what they've done to several of my favorite characters just left such a sour taste in my mouth.

I don't know, maybe they're doing what they need to
do to sell comics nowdays.  A lot of it's just not for me.  If the only way to make someone like Cyclops relatable nowdays is to have him start sending out hit squads, you've passed me by.  If that's me being resistent to change, guilty as charged.

But Marvel dominates the market.  So of the people currently reading comics they seem to be the top choice.

I'm right there with you.  X-Men Forever and that's it for now.

I'm not sure about seeing Wolverine's mother, though.  I've got this image in my mind of an older woman with curlers in her hair, standing in her back-lit doorway, with a rolling pin in her hands, as Sabretooth slinks back home after a night out.

It's good to hear that Austin will be doing an issue.  Now they're only one player away from the trifecta!

Wait, I thought that Damien was the actual son of Talia and Batman born in the SON OF THE DEMON graphic novel back in the 80's? I remember Morrison talking about bringing that back into continuity.

Yup, X-Men Forever is where it's at these days, as far as superheroes are concerned.

Nope. That is considered an Elseworlds story. Damien was created in a lab, not the old fashioned way. Though that fact wasn't revealed until well after he'd been around a while. (Batman #666, which takes place in a future where Damien is Batman; if I remember correctly, he tells his origin in an inner monologue. I forget what issue he was introduced in, but I believe it was one of Morrison's first issues)

So basically Damien was genetically engineered using the DNA from both Batman and Talia, correct?
