"...not always easy, as global corporates and supply chains
muddy the waters..."

**

An understatement! I'm going through the same thing
currently.

A friend of mine has been arguing that Trump says all these crazy things by design.  That is is all part of some elaborate 5D chess game.  Hard for me to see that.

Trump isn’t smart enough for 2d chess, much less 5d.

He's not a complete idiot. If he is, we should all be a lot more concerned that he's been able to do everything that he's managed to get away with.

Trump is basically like any well-experienced predator; he knows how to cover his own ass and he knows how to amass resources. Part of his skill set is that he's an innately gifted propagandist and highly charismatic figure, and he definitely knows how to read people immediately and target their weaknesses.

I think Trump's real weakness - and one that we're all reeling from now - is that he thrives in one-to-one conflict but has no idea how to manage multiple conflicts, and he also doesn't know how to approach a problem unless he can reframe it for himself as a conflict. Bear in mind, this is a guy who asked why we couldn't just blow up a nuke to stop a hurricane. This shows his other weaknesses as being ignorant as fuck about anything outside of his immediate predator worldview, and of course immune to learning.

Yes, he really is. He’s just managed to get the “right” people around him
this time more than the last.

He's not smart. He seems devoid of normal concerns of empathy or fear of screwing things up, and this is combined with an animal instinct for weak spots or loopholes in rules and a knack for simplistic propaganda, which makes him curiously dangerous and effective.
