Rebuilding my Altadena house after the fires of 2025 and looking at tile now. The house is 1940's and we're trying to restore it, so old fashioned tiles, right? A very typical bathroom floor pattern from the 30's to the 70's was "hex tile" - a pattern of hexagons. Then I saw this. I think Jack Kirby had a knack for making outlandish things seem familiar. I can't help imagining him (or Chic Stone or Joe Sinnott) being around so many of these kinds of floors and having it creep into his developing look of the Thing.

Oh rats. Can't get the picture to upload-- it's a picture of orange hex tiles and looks just like the skin of the Thing.

Well…… I have long maintained that Ben’s “rocky” hide looks like a dry riverbed. Not so even as your tiles.

Yeah, that makes sense. Now that I imagine his whole body covered with tiles, he would look more like some kind of bronze lizard character. But one look at that floor and all my first thought was, "HEY! THE THING!"

Second thought was "$38 per square foot!? What's it made of, solid gold!?"
