Mr Byrne

I recently read your OMAC series for the first time.  I read through some old threads here at the forum and you mentioned there was talk of coloring the series for a special edition (that never happened).

Out of curiosity, what color scheme did you have planned for your OMAC considering the slight costume varations from the Kirby model?

Thanks.

I gave no thought to colors for OMAC, as I wanted it in black&white.

Since JB's OMAC has been brought up, can I just do a bit (well, a lot, actually) of fanboy gushing to just say how much I enjoyed this series.

I don't remember much of the original Kirby series -- strange that I should've missed it -- but JB 's four issue series is just brilliant.

I'd like to see it collected ... doesn't matter to me if it's colour or b/w ... but given that JB says he wanted it in b/w I'd prefer it remain that way.

(You know what I mean : I don't like colourised movies either ...)

Thanks, Mr Byrne.

I was just wondering for my "mind's eye" -- I know Kirby's coloring but with the little variations to your design, I didn't know how it should be colored in my head.

I very much enjoyed the duo-tone art you were doing during this period.  I think OMAC is the pinnacle of this style for you, in my opinion.

John MARIANI -- shoot me an email.  I've got details on a collected edition you may be interested in.

I guess I should clarify my initial post about the "coloring" of OMAC.  I read in an old thread that the book was intended to be released as a colored edition --- this is exactly what Mr Byrne said about that:

Another small historical note:

When I convinced DC to do OMAC in black and white, one of their
"conditions" was that there would also be a subsequent trade paperback
release in color. This necessitated modifying what I had originally
intended to be my approach with the DuoShade. I'd been studying the
likes of Wally Wood, whose use of the similar Craftint boards had been so
spectacularly effective in MAD. One of the things I definitely wanted to do
was use the grey tones to actually define and hold the shape of objects,
as Wood often did.

However, because of the plan to do a later color reprint, I was compelled
to do more or less conventional linework on OMACK, sending in the
pages to be photostated (in those days before computer scanning became
the norm) before being returned to me for adding the gray tones. This
was done with all four issues.

Then the photstats were "lost". Honest to god! The entire four issues, all
the photostats turned up missing when the editor left DC and his office
was emptied. So no color reprint.

Years later, I am told, the photostats were found -- "behind a filing
cabinet" -- but DC has expressed no interest since in completing our
original deal. One more admonission, I suppose, to get these things in
writing.

So, it was DC who wanted the coloring NOT John Byrne.  My mistake.

Every time it is mentioned, I feel obligated to say that OMAC is probably my favorite work of JB's.

Just a perfect performance.

I've never read this book.  Kirby's or JB's.  I was doing some online research and I read that Kirby's run ended with an abrupt cliffhanger.  Does JB's run finish the original Kirby storyline or is JB's run a whole new story altogether?  I know there was a lot of ret-conning going on at this time.  If JB's storyline is brand new was the Kirby storyline ever brought to a fitting conclusion somewhere else?  Thanks.

JB uses both versions of OMAC, and goes with a whole new storyline.

JB's OMAC books made me want to see an ongoing OMAC series...

Oh, and a bit of blasphemy here... I enjoyed JB's OMAC more than Jack
Kirby's!

"Doc Omac" was cool. Wish they'd collect the entire thing and maybe do a couple of action figures, to boot.
