An article positing that Donald Trump = Lex Luthor. Interesting.
JB and MOS get a mention as part of the discussion.
Update: LINK function not working for me.
Here's the actual URL: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/08/14/the-many-wa ys-donald-trump-is-a-real-life-lex-luthor.html

Just dropped a quick note to the author of the piece, mentioning that the idea for Luthor as a Trump style billionaire, while developed and fleshed out by yours truly, was pitched first by Marv Wolfman.

JB: Just dropped a quick note to the author of the piece, mentioning that the idea for Luthor as a Trump style billionaire, while developed and fleshed out by yours truly, was pitched first by Marv Wolfman.
SER: What I loved about the Wolfman/JB Luthor* was that he had already "conquered" Metropolis by the time Superman arrived. This was a great "back to basics" approach thematically because Superman was once again the "champion of the oppressed," and the man who couldn't be bought -- not even by Luthor.
I preferred JB's Luthor to Wolfman (and if you read the first year of post-MOS stories, there is a clear difference in the characters) because JB's Luthor was practically Satanic (METROPOLIS 900 MILES feeling almost like the devil taking flesh to tempt an average soul and crush her spirit). It wasn't just "brain vs brawn" but the satanic Luthor trying to break or otherwise corrupt the noble spirit in Superman.

For those who may be new to this, this was Wolfman's pitch, word for word:"Outside Metropolis is a mountain. On that mountain, in his fabulous Xanadu-like estate, lives Lex Luthor, the world's richest man, and his mistress, Lois Lane. You see, she's drawn to power." At first, I told Wolfman I wasn't interested, as this seemed much more like a reboot of Lois than of Lex, and not in a direction I wished to see her taken. After we pared away the stuff about Lois, I felt we were left with something we could use.

There was an ongoing desire in the SUPERMAN books at the time to depict Lois as less than likable. I recall some early '80s stories where Clark Kent is dating Lana (as Clark, I believe, not Superman). I've mentioned before how the character in the 1960s was almost full-on antagonistic toward Superman. Even my "civilian" wife didn't understand: "Why would she want to expose Superman's secret identity? Wouldn't jeopardize his friends and family? That's kind of scuzzy." I guess if you have decades of Lois as basically Jack McGee, Wolfman's pitch winds up not being too out of left field.
But -- wow! -- is it misogynistic! Lois is drawn to power -- who cares if it's directed toward evil or good. No, it's whoever has the biggest....
Ugh.
JB's Lois was someone I could respect -- tough, assertive, funny. I could also understand why Superman loved her.

Superman and Lois had a somewhat high-profile breakup in 1983-when Wolfman began writing ACTION COMICS, for a run of about a year.(This was in ACTION # 544, which introduced a 'new-look' Braniac and the 'battle armor' Luthor). Cary Bates remained on SUPERMAN, and there was tighter continuity between both titles. Also at this point, Steve Lombard was phased out, and Perry and Alice White had marital issues(including Perry's first signs of Alzheimer's).At first, Lois was on assignment overseas, purposely distancing herself from Metropolis in general, and Superman in particular. Clark became something less of a wuss, and began dating Lana.
I was only reading both titles sporadically at that point, and by 1985, it seemed like DC had begun to ignore a lot of these changes. There was a lot of 'filler', by Cary Bates and Elliott Maggin(among others) in SUPERMAN, while ACTION switched to two or thee stories per issue, with more lighthearted fare, some of which was usually by Bob Rozakis, before the 1986 'changeover'.

The article has been expanded with information from my email. I look forward to my attempt to give Wolfman proper credit being turned into a Big Bad Byrne story!

"Superman and Lois had a somewhat high-profile breakup in 1983-when Wolfman began writing ACTION COMICS..." ****
Wasn't that done in an attempt to reflect the Salkind Superman movie continuity of the era? Lois was out, Lana was in; and the comics were just following what the movies were doing.

Wait, so you mean comic book companies 'revising' characters and team lineups in the vain hope of picking up new readers in the afterglow of a popular movie isn't a new thing?
;-)
