Kind of a weird question and no hard feelings if it doesn't garner any attention.  When I was a kid, I bought the graphic novel "The Futurians" by Dave Cockrum.  I thought it was fantastic.  I remember my buddies and I all had copies and we read it over and over.  We even played the Marvel Role Playing Game at the time and created the Futurians characters (guessing at their ability levels, drawing/making our own cards, etc).  We kept waiting for action figures, or even a monthly comic.

In my eight-year-old mind, the Futurians were as good as any of the monthly books from Marvel at the time like Alpha Flight, New Mutants, West Coast Avengers, etc.  I always wondered why nothing ever happened with the Futurians "brand"?  For example, "New Mutants" came out as a graphic novel, with all new characters, and they were promoted to monthly title.

I have NO idea how the comic industry works, and no hard feelings if everyone else thought the Futurians super team wasn't that great.  Does anyone have any great insight into why the Futurians never "made it"?

Dave was a wonderful artist, and a helluva designer, but the comic gods shorted him on the necessary speed to produce a series in a timely fashion.

I ache a little when I think of all the great stuff we didn't get to see!

There was a four issue series (I think it was meant to be ongoing) of "The Futurians." Issues #1 - #3 were published by Lodestone Comics, and #0 ( issue #4) was put out a few years later by Aardwolf publishing.

Eternity Comics put out a trade paperback in between Lodestone and Aardwolf's publications. I recall it had a reprint of issue #4 in color (the #0 from Aardwolf was in black and white).

Here is some more info from Comic Vine:

I really enjoyed Dave Cockrum's regular comic series of the team. He referenced homemade comics he made as a kid where some of the characters appeared before actually being published, which I thought was fun.

Funny, I could put my hands on it in a matter of minutes, but I do not remember much about it other than the costumes.

As I recall, Marvel published the graphic novel and it was all set to go to series (through their Epic Comics brand), but then Lodestone lured Mr. Cockrum over with big pay and promises--and then went out of business.  I was under the impression that Cockrum had burned his bridges with Marvel over taking the project elsewhere.

I always felt that this was one of the saddest examples of the behind the scenes machinations ruining what the fans get to see.  If he had stayed with Epic, I think we could have had a LOT more issues.

There was a period during the early years of Image where Rob Liefeld was planning to bring back The Futurians at that publsiher.

Trying to find info online about Liefeld's plans in the 1990s' to revive The Futurians, it looks like as recent as last year he was still trying to bring back the series: LINK.

Got to love the guy who co-created Nightcrawler, Storm,
and Colossus.

I vaguely remember that some Futurian characters were
initially intended for the X-Men, Silkie for one?

Sadly the best thing about it was indeed the design. The original graphic novel is alright but all the charcaters ring a loud bell. The comeback second series left me really cold.

Yep, Dave said the exact same thing in his introduction to the "lost" fourth issue which was published in the 90s:

The Futurians began as a graphic novel for Marvel (Marvel Graphic Novel #9), wherein I recounted the adventures of eight extraordinary humans with powers gained by way of genetic manipulation from the future. The graphic novel did pretty well, went into three printings, and a series was called for. Unfortunately, I let myself be lured away from Marvel and did the series for an independent publisher who promised pie-in-the-sky money. If I'd stayed with Marvel, we might be publishing Futurians #250 or something by now. Instead, I went with the independent, occasionally called Lodestone Publications, and my run only lasted three issues. A fourth issue was finished; this book you hold in your hands.
