I often read and admire his wonderful x-men of 1969 on the internet...Except for 5 days, the same date of birth as my father...Mr Byrne, you paid him a vibrant tribute on Uncanny X-men's cover n°135

Neal was, according to what he said, most unhappy with most of the covers he did during his run on X-MEN. "Piss poor" he called them, largely due to editorial interference. As many of you probably know, his original design for 56 was this: It was rejected by the editorial powers that were, who claimed the figures obscuring the logo might have a negative impact on sales. Neal did the cover that was published, but showed his ire by adding cute little bows to the boots of the Living Monolith.

(I'm removing this post since it has nothing to do with Neal Adams -- Tim)

Q for JB: You’ve said that in your career, you were sometimes unhappy with your own work because it didn’t look enough like Neal Adams. Has that particular thought stopped coming to you?

Let’s say rather that I’ve gotten better at ignoring it. Mostly.

Adams talked about this in an interview in Comic Book Artist #3, pointing out how silly it was to be worried about people being unable to read the logo when X-Men was on the verge of cancellation:
"I thought, they're going to kill the book in two issues, and they're worried if anyone can identify the logo because of sales. If you obliterate the logo and make it hard to read you might actually pick up sales!"

I don't think so; his initial drawing is of course superb as an artistic work in itself, but, for me, far too "loaded" compared to the final "editorial purity"; it is the mixture between the "editorial necessary reason" and "the artistic fantasy of drawing" that make it a work of graphic art in its own right...
