Something I learned from this is that tumbleweed are dead. Iíd somehow assumed they were migratory and rerooted themselves from time to time.

But they sure as heck are still here.  Iím in a very suburban part of the Bay Area and itís pretty normal to see 6-10 foot wide tumbleweeds blowing across the roads on the outskirts of town.
