I'm actually surprised he was as young as he was!  Only a year younger than my own mother, he would have only been in his early 20's during his initial 1970s Marvel heyday.  Quite impressive when you think about it.

Sad to hear, a name that was always around, for as long as I've been reading comics.

Gerry was responsible for writing two of my absolute favorite comics, Superman vs Spider-Man and JLA #200. His "Conway Corner" of DC comics were my favorite DC comics when they were being published.

R.I.P. Gerry.

IIRC he was the one who killed off Gwen Stacy, a pretty consequential
moment in Spidey history, and not long after also created The Punisher, a
surprisingly enduring and popular Marvel character.   As a kid I also
remember reading some Detective comics from the mid-late seventies by
him and taking notice of him along with, of course, the big Superman vs.
Spider-man one shot, an impressive book and memorable crossover that
both publishers could be proud of. All of those were in about a four or five
year period early in my young comic reading days so his work was
meaningful for me. RIP

This one hits a little tougher than I would have expected.  I started reading comics a couple of years after he killed off Gwen Stacy and the Green Goblin, but I was enthralled by the "ghost" of Gwen Stacy "haunting" Peter Parker over a number of issues--that's one of the things that hooked me into comics.  He wrote just about all the big ones and created quite a few of his own.  Some of his stuff I loved, some of it left me a little cold, but I think I was forever changed by his writing.  Short stints on WONDER WOMAN, CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN, and DEFENDERS are some of my favorites.  Honestly, comics would not be the same without him.
