i think the technical claim to fame is "First Gay mainstream superhero" - maintream being key to separate from Underground or Parody characters.

I would Northstar be moody and arrogant than some swishy, gay stereotype.

Around the time of the whole Rawhide Kid thing, Stan Lee said in interviews he'd intended for one of the Howling Commandos, Percy Pinkerton, to be gay. It's not exactly a superhero, but I wonder if he managed to work innuendo into the comics for any readers to catch.

yeah . . his nickname was "Pinky" . . i mean, c'mon . . it's OBVIOUS. or not . .
and regarding Northstar, while he is a bit of an arrogant jerk, he does have ALOT of reasons to be -- but he does have many possitive attribues, and his heroism is unquestionable, he just didn't play well with others - he would risk himself and save anyone, but he woudln't play well with them . . and in the end, that's intersting.

Yeah, I think JB himself in an interview commented on Percy Pinkerton.
Personally, I loved the Aurora - Sasquatch - Northstar triangle. Very interesting subtext.

Altho Stan may have intended Percy to be light in the loafers, the name or even the nickname "Pinky" are pretty hard to hold up as "evidence" given British social customs. I mean, c'mon! These are guys who (at least in the past) would routinely refer to each other as "old fruit" and "old flower" with no sexual connotation intended. If I had to pick one probably Gay character who predates Northstar and who presents evidence for his "case" in the books, it would be Sweet William, the villain created by Roy Thomas in THE AVENGERS, who spoke (except when the letterer forgot) all in ITALICS

there was I remember one of those early 90's Marvel Swimsuit Pin Ups, where Northstar was shown poolside alongside...ANOTHER guy who looked pretty talented as well!! It was, to even me, almost shocking to see that in a comic!

I'm not sure, but...as far as I can tell, has there been a LESBIAN character? Was Monica Rambeau (Captain Marvel/Photon) Les?

Northstar isn't arrogant, he is french! (Well, french-canadian, at least.)
(Now all my french friends are going to kill me. Kidding, guys, just kidding.)
Now seriously, at first I didn't notice that he was gay, I just thought he was attracted to his sister (hey, I am an only child! And I was attracted to Aurora too! It was creepy, yes, but I could understand his feelings...). Took me some time to connect the dots (when I saw how... Interested... He seemed to be on Sasquatch). Yeah, I'm probably a bit dim.
Oh, and I agree with JB. Percy isn't gay, he is british (runs away at top speed).
Edited for typo fixing.
