I love the classic Red and Gold Iron Man it was so iconic!!!

***

Of course, by the drift of this thread, anyone who refers to Iron Man's armor as "red and gold" must be wrong, right? Even tho he is called "the Golden Avenger", the color used is yellow. So if it is strictly the color that counts, his armor is Red and Yellow.

 QUOTE:
He intended the hi-lights to be "cool blue".

Maybe he did, but that's not what he said in that quote.  The context of that paragraph equates the "warm red orange on the webbing section" and the "cool blue on the body parts", so unless the red orange is supposed to be highlights, too, he's talking about the main color in both cases.

I think though they always referred to him as the "Golden Avenger" and as a kid realized that the color yellow on Iron Man was short hand for Gold....

They often tried to add in darker spots or orange or umber to give it that impression...

I thought the Silver Centurion armor of Iron Man really screwed up because the light blue highlights on it made it look white and not silver.... When they did GREY highlights from time to time it looked silver.....Covers would usually pull this off...

Funny how the dialogue and captions used in the books would reinforce the wrong colors by stating BLUE in cases...

He's talking about color the way a comicbook artist talks about color. If he intended the black parts to be "cool blue" he would have left them open for color. He would not have filled up the spaces with black. Anybody working in the field -- especailly a colorist -- would know exactly what Ditko meant when he said "cool blue". That was what he wanted for the highlights.

Getting back to the point, my picks for best costume changes:

1. Wolverine's brown costume
2. Namor's black costume with underarm wings
3. Goliath's change to Yellowjacket
4. Wonder Man's switch to the safari jacket.
5. Robin's second costume design (Neal Adams design) with the long
tights and black cape.

Yugoslavia's Daredevil

It was a common thing in Europe to publish U.S. super-heroes without copyright, hence "Neboysha" appeared in the 1970's, with a blue and yellow costume.

Love the first Goliath costume over Giant Man and the Barton Goliath.

Agreed:

  • Daredevil red costume (Wally Wood design)
  • Neal Adams - Angel (one of the best)
  • Kid Flash yellow/red over "Flash Junior" uniform
  • Black Widow catsuit
  • Captain Marvel red/blue over Kree uniform
  • JB Fantastic Four color change (thank you Negative Zone)
  • Iron Man red/gold over gray
  • Yellowjacket (although Giant Man was cool too)
  • Thor w/ beard
  • Yugoslavia's blue/yellow Daredevil a.k.a. "Neboysha"

Also:

  • Green Hulk over gray one
  • "Red" Robin from Kingdom Come, disagrees with Batman/sides with Superman (probably the best Robin)

Noteworthy change:

  • JB's Wonder Man in AWC

(just kidding about Neboysha)

If Spidey's regular costume is red & black, and not red & blue, then shouldn't the border on current Spidey comics read "Back in ALL Black" ?
