Years ago I read that neighborhoods with high death rates from drug overdoses are what some cops call “self-cleaning ovens”. Maybe we’ll have the same situation with people who listen to Trump.

I’m still amazed at that one. I suppose my high school chemistry served me well in seeing a difference between chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine.

As predicted, Los Angeles is closing the Runyon Canyon hiking trail because too many people tried hiking there. And Angelenos did the same to beaches and other trails over the weekend, so Mayor Garcetti is closing parking lots and telling people to stay home. I should have figured people would clog all the hiking trails since everything else is closed. I'm glad I am in a neighborhood I can walk around. I also have an outdoor patio area, but it's been a bit rainy and cold.
I am doing well using my kitchen table as a work place, but I am eating way too much! Its good to have space separation, though - it's a relief to get into the living room to enjoy TV or a book at night.
I am also helping my friend who has a ten year old cooped up at home - I see them so much that we had already shared all our germs before lock down began. We are learning the game Catan together, which I gave him for Christmas and we haven't had time to learn. We have time now! We also play Chess, Monopoly, and whatever he wants. He's big into video games, but he also does board games with me, his mom and his grandmother.

One reason that quarantine was not that bad here in China is that everything is deliverable. As well, there is usually no delivery fee or it is very cheap. Also no tipping. I can order from any restaurant in shanghai and get it delivered for under a dollar or less. Online shopping is massive with same-day or next-day delivery. Starbucks delivery is quite dangerous, as is McDonalds. The delivery boys aren’t allowed into the compound so they phone when it’s food and you meet them at the gate or if it is a package, they have a wall of postal boxes that you open with a code sent to your phone. It’s all quite civilized.

Getting back to normal here.
If there are any teachers here that are looking for high-paying jobs in September, I imagine that many schools here will be hungry for teachers. I think they will not be getting many applicants.

Yep. Still no school but society is opening up again. Just today the compound where I live opened the gates to deliveries. That means we don't have to go to the gate to pick up deliveries anymore and they will deliver right to our door. Other than everyone wearing masks, most stores are up and running. Starbucks still has no chairs and a few restaurants are still closed. Schools in the province next to mine are opening their schools next week. The new cases are coming in from other countries now. If you fly into Shanghai, you are quarantined for 14 days, at your expense, in a hotel. My friend flew in the night before the new rules so he gets to be quarantined in his apartment, but the police visit regularly to ensure he stays inside. I am lucky that Shanghai is by far the most modern city in China so things are more relaxed here compared to other parts of the country. My only worry is that the mandatory quarantine is still on by the summer, which would mean I would no be able to go back to Canada this summer, which would suck. Nothing I can do about it so will just wait and see.
For everyone just starting this, realize that it gets better.

Neil, my dread is that the Chinese* government is over-optimistic and things aren't settled or stable yet. Of course, there is no possible way for you to know this; I don't know the nature of the Chinese government anymore, and if they lie, or if they're mostly honest.
In any case, good news is good news, and hearing you are well is very good news, mate! Stay well, and when you get a chance... drop us an update or two.
*I mean no insult, but is China still referred to as PRC? It was a couple decades ago, and I don't know if that's still the case or not. I'd hate to get it wrong...
