Prediction: after a few years of this, White Liberals will be tut-tutting that there isn’t enough “diversity” in branding.

David,

I live in the area. I love going at it with fans of DC's NFL franchise.

RE:  the DC NFL team.  The name Redhawks has been floated....  They could still do a similar logo with the feathers, etc., and not be racially offensive!

In days of yore, primitive man dressed himself in the furs of animals, in part to take the “powers” of those animals for himself. Isn’t the same principle at work when sports teams festoon themselves with representations of Native American culture? Aren’t they trying to adopt the strength, courage, cunning that they see in idealized forms of those peoples?

Time to retire all the ‘Aunts’ and ‘Uncles’ and I’m lookin’ at that tan on Mrs’ Butterworth and dammit I got questions!

Is Mrs. Butterworth Black? I think she is supposed to be white. The bottle is brown.

Does this mean every time an Asian or Latino chef puts their name on packaged food, they're inviting racism against their ethnicity?

I can understand the backlash against police brutality. I fear the backlash against the backlash.

Nope. That was an easy question!

The key word is “take”. We should be open to celebrating other cultures and sharing with other cultures. That’s wonderful. But that involves understanding, respecting, and communicating with them. What happens too often is people taking the trappings of those cultures and using them as a costume or a mascot without that understanding or respect.

One suggestion I saw floated was to change the image and branding to "Chef Jem." That might be a great update.

+++++++++++++

Surprised no one has said this yet:

*ahem* That would be truly outrageous!

(Mister Whitebread would make more sense....)

On the Redskins front, I've said for a while that if they want to keep the logo, just change their name to Warriors. Wouldn't necessarily be offensive, but as long as they don't do something stupid like adopting a catchphrase that involvse the word "warpath", that would work.

And I don't believe Mrs. Butterworth is meant to be black.

The DC NFL football team needs to abandon the native American motif altogether just to be clear that the message has been received.  ‘Warriors’ is cool...but NO FUCKING INDIAN HEAD LOGO!.  Keep the colors.  Find a new logo.  Market it and make money.  Be on the right side of history and be proud to do it. This shit should not be this hard.

And i was joking about Mrs. Butterworth.

I thought Mrs. Butterworth was supposed to be Black. The shape is such a standard cliche "Mammy".
