As for "why didn't she kill me?", I'm guessing there's still a shred of Jean inside holding back the Phoenix or Wolverine would have been incinerated, not just microwaved.

I remember being in school and a kid I barely knew (who later became a good friend), Erik Petersen, was telling me about the X-Men comics he was reading. He was really excited; there was this guy who was SO COOL, he had CLAWS pop out of his hands!
First time I heard about Wolverine.

Also, I should add, I don't mean to dismiss that what Dark Phoenix did to Wolverine wasn't viciously hurtful or "merely" intolerably agonizing. I just aimed to note that it would have been as easy to kill him outright than inflict a devastating hurt.
I for one would not want to know how it feels to have my bones super-heated...

"Hot as the Sun?" Wouldn't his skin cook off? Wouldn't the ground ignite when he landed? Wouldn't he be too hot for Kitty to touch?
I guess she did say that she "could" do that... not that she actually did anything to him.

I wasn't fully back to buying comics when I saw that HULK issue introducing Wolverine at a local drugstore/newsstand. I flipped thru the issue and really had no idea what was going on--but right from the get-go I thought the costume was silly for a character called "Wolverine".I've had this little guy perched atop my monitor for a dozen years or so, as a reminder. 
Sorry he's out of focus, The iPhone kept bouncing back and forth between foreground and background, and I guess I clicked at the wrong moment. Still, gets the point across as far as color.

I also ‘discovered’ Wolverine quite organically.
On the spinner rack was the brand new Hulk #180. And the last page was my first glimpse at a new character called ‘Wolverine’. Being a Michigan kid I assumed he was supposed to be from here. His Canadian background didn't sink in until later.
Then came the iconic...CLASSIC Hulk #181 and I was HOOKED! This new character was really cool and appealed to me right away. I was sad to not see more of him until...an issue of FOOM hit our mailbox! In this particular issue was an announcement about the soon to be revamped X-Men, and ‘Wolverine’ was to be a member! That was also the first time I learned Wolverine was a mutant. A few months later and GSXM#1 hits the stands...the rest is history...and Wolverine has become probably the most “popular”...overused...abused and mishandled character in recent comics history.
I still love the guy, but I’d be happy if I saw him about half as much as I have over the years. And John Byrne is the ONLY creator I’d trust to handle him consistently, properly, long term.

I’m pretty sure my introduction to Wolverine was the X-MEN issue
where Alpha Flight tries to take him back.
