JB: Somehow, paying for six issues to get a “story” that could have been told in one (or less) doesn’t leave them feeling as if their pockets have been picked.

I imagine that once initial contact had been made with Alpha Flight, Xavier would have taken a close interest in a group with two mutants.

I wonder what that first Alpha Flight/X-Men encounter would look like drawn by today's John Byrne. I loved it then, and imagine I'd be completly blown away now.
(By the way, that story was my first issue of the new team.)

Delightful first page of the week.
Always a treat to see Shaman (my favorite AF member).
Enjoyed seeing Shaman reaching in his bag while Guardian is ready to protect Heather in that last panel.

I do wonder who's at fault. Many have complained that today's X-men feels like a soap opera. Is it possible that the comic book reader demographic has shifted, and there is less demand for action and more for navel gazing and the mundane---literally soap opera topics?

This makes me think of the directors of the notorious bad movies, "Manos: The Hand of Fate" and "Birdemic". Both have long, drawn-out driving scenes that are totally unnecessary, among the many other poor directing and editing choices.

The audience has gotten older thru a combination of aging and the companies shifting to target that greying demographic. Each feeds the other. Factor in the influx of aging fans-turned-pros, who want to write and draw more “mature” (ie sophomoric) material, and we find the industry chopping off the traditional source new readers, kids. Stan Lee played up the soap opera elements, but he understood the place for Spider-Man to be moping about his latest romantic catastrophe was in the middle of a fight with Doc Ock, not while he shuffled around his kitchen making coffee.
