Had a conversation with my mom the other day that wasn't like any other we'd ever had.  She's pretty convinced that the descent into authoritarianism for America is unavoidable. I'm also pretty much in that camp.  I sometimes feel the best we can hope for at this point is that we can get ourselves back out - maybe within a generation? - and hopefully do so without bloodshed.

After watching my home city of Portland burn every night for six months those cosplayers in the capitol didn't even move the needle for me.

As horrible as January 6th was, all they did was bring the urban chaos raging throughout the country to the Capitol.

Time for me to repeat something I have talked about many times since
2016.

When Ken Johnston wanted to make a TV mini series about the fall of
America into a fascist state, the only thing he could think of as being the
means by which this could happen, was an alien invasion.

How the times have changed.

Think about how few actual democracies there are in the world. And they are shrinking, not expanding. In Europe, anti-democratic forces have taken hold of countries even within the EU, like Poland and Hungary.

If the USA falls, I fear the rest will follow.

They tried to forcibly stop the certification of the presidential election.  In which urban area is that occurring again?

When people feel like their leaders aren't representing their interests (and sometimes they're not wrong) they find themselves buying into charlatans and con men who promise they're "one of them". Who understands their pain. But it's just a power grab.

I'm not entirely surprised this happened. But I continuously find myself shocked at how many people buy into his shit.

There is no fringe anymore. It is wide open.

••

A parallel to what happened in comics. As audience numbers shrank, the fringe moved closer to the center.

Does Trump already having been impeached for his involvement in this protect him under double jeopardy laws?
