I’m a kid of the 60’s and 70’s. When you started your run on Fantastic Four, I wasn’t sure about you inking your work. After years of Joe Sinnott giving FF it’s signature look, I was a bit worried. I didn’t read many of the Jack Kirby issues when they were published. I did get to see how Joe kept the pencils of many different artists look close to each other.I didn’t have to worry though. Your inking style didn’t copy Sinnott’s work or Kirby’s for that matter, as much as give respect to it.

Inking the FF was a kind of emergency maneuver. When Terry decided he didn’t want the job after all, there were only two inkers available, Jim Mooney and Vinnie Colletta. Neither really suited the “vision” for the book, so Jim Salicrup, the editor, suggested I do it myself.

So glad he did! By the by, what was the inspiration for having Jerry Ordway perform the inks later in the run? It was a very striking collaboration.

The thought of you writing, drawing and inking a monthly book is almost unbelievable in retrospective --- seriously...who can do that?!?!

Reaching back a bit in this thread, someone likened Bilquis to Lee Weeks (and then Kubert). It did not know Weeks at all so I looked him up. There was something of a return-to-basics in his art that I liked (very different than a certain-Lee-that-ate-comics in the 90's, who never did it for me).
Turns out Weeks was a Kubert School graduate which makes sense.

Maybe this will be sacrilegious to say give the legend that has grown up around the Byrne-Austin X-Men days, but I actually liked Byrne inked by Byrne on FF than Austin over Byrne on Uncanny. I liked it a LOT more. I did enjoy Ordway's inks on the FF a lot too. They always gave me a Kirby/Wood feel.

Terry Austin turned down working with you on Fantastic Four??Although he did do some work with you on FF later, In my opinion his style changed a bit which, for me, wasn't as appealing as other inkers (including yourself). Or, maybe JB's style changed a bit and as a result didn't have that same 'magic' as when both were on X-Men.

Honestly, I thought at first Joe Sinnott in the sixties would have been the guy to do it, but knowing now that the pages had shrunk and Joe was quite a bit older(mostly retired I would guess) options you had were limited to say the least. Jerry Orway has a style that is most evocative of Sinnott to me, in a updated fashion. Paul Neary might have been interesting, but he wasn’t working for Marvel at that time. Joe Rubinstein would have been a good match too.

Given the number of fans who asked if Chris was going to “help out” scripting the FF when I started, it’s perhaps just as well Terry ultimately passed on the job!

JB on the FF was the first time that I thought, wow, here is the "real" John Byrne, pure, and it was a sheer delight. I never found myself wishing in any way at all that anybody else was working on that run.
(It was also instructive in terms of how much Terry Austin brought to the X-MEN run that was both essential and awesome.)
