I always appreciated Marvel's "floating heads"!  It enabled the cover to be about anything, but still show the stars of the book.  Did any other company ever really practice that?

I wonder if he meant number 6?  Number 7 is credited to Kirby/Austin and looks like it, whereas number 6 (below) is straight-up Simonson (and EXcellent).

In years past I represented the Jack Kirby Museum in local comic conventions. To highlight the extend of Jack's career I put together slide shows of his covers and splash pages and displayed them on a television screen. This thread has been fun to watch as the page count went up and the images were posted. 

The images I used were captured in a database for easy additions and sorting. Querying the database by range of years (1970 - 1979), publisher (Marvel), and type (cover), returns 356 rows. Many of these covers are re-used from original series into reprint series such as Marvel's Greatest Comics. Marvel was putting out more reprinted Kirby covers per month than DC was putting out while Jack was working for DC.

There are a few cover pencils within the database and I will share them over the next few days.

Here is the first, from Giant-Size Conan #5 January 1975.
