Ughh, "Origins" certainly ruined Wolverine for me.... I enjoyed the mysterious persona he had early on. Should've stuck with that.

The mystery for me might be summed up in Wolverine questioned by Nightcrawler (#139) saying "you never asked", so that line seems perfect.

It was a running theme so far as in the Savage Land (#114-116) in taking out a native guard Storm I think it was pondered on how little they knew about him or what he was capable of. Why throw that element away by over-explaining? Readers need to have some i's undotted and some t's not crossed. It gave his relationship with Mariko a unique contrast as well.

When the readers become the writers sometimes they want to dot all those i's and cross all those t's their way, not in small or subtle amounts... but of course other readers will have their own ideas and explanations so then they become writers... and here we are in 2024 with multiple restarts and origins up the wazoo.

Makes sense, although arguably that kind of mystery would only last so long. It stretches credulity that he could maintain that dynamic in the group indefinitely.

Which leads us to a suggestion that has been mentioned here many times by those much wiser than I: beyond a certain window of time (what was that, seven years?), the intended reader is meant to move on to other interests ...

Tom Breevort just posted a timeline of “When Wolverine became
WOLVERINE” and it takes about 6 1/2 years from his introduction to become
what all of us think of as Wolverine. It’s essentially from HULK 181 thru the
end of the Claremont/Byrne run. One point he makes within that never
occurred to me is that nowhere within is it ever brought up that our big
Logan has any kind of memory issues that pop up in the mythology later.
Indeed, he makes references to stuff that happened to him when he was a
kid. Now, it’s kind of seen that Logan can’t remember his past before, what,
Dept H and when Mac and Heather took him in? But in those foundational
years, there’s no evidence of it at all.

He also shows how Claremont, first with Cockrum, then with JB goes about
changing Wein’s plans as far as his development went. For example: no
longer 19, class part of him and not in the gloves…

It’s an interesting look back.

Remember, none of Len’s plans made it into the book.
