I also thought Sal and Klaus were a great two-for-one combo.

Count me among those who found Jerry Ordway's inks over JB's JLA pencils to be overpowering. (Ordway is an incredible artist though. I really enjoyed his work on POWER OF SHAZAM.)

I’m torn on Ordway’s JLA inks, from the perspective that if I hadn’t seen the pencils, would I have keyed in to how much Ordway redrew and overpowered?

I do think they were heavy handed in the context of seeing the comparison.

I own a page from the FF run, and a page from the JLA run, and was surprised at how similar they looked together.

"Well, this is the guy who redrew a Curt Swan Superman to
look like his own."

Well that's ballsy, to say the least.

I think sometimes it's about more than just layouts vs fully finished pencils. It's about the artist being inked.  Guys I liked, like Sal or Gil Kane were total pro's but were almost never going to give a spec more than the job required and thus benefited from heavy Inkers like Klaus Jansen or Akin & Garvey (On Sal in Rom)    These inkers would spice up the somewhat ordinary or generic looking Pencils. (Throw in a lot of "special effects".) JB's pencils, or an Adams, Bolland or Golden, I'd like to see those pencils inked more closely to the art.

Sometimes, Vince Colletta's heavy style would erase a lot on Kirby's Thor art but much of the feathering he did, smoothed away some the roughness on Kirby to make it less Jarring, so it was a give & take.

I never liked DeZuniga and Klaus or to a lesser degree Pablo Marcus on JB.   As for Ordway, it was pleasing on JB but still to my eyes, it  pushed away the art from what I imagined it must've looked like. Of course my theory falls apart on Terry Austin. a VERY heavy inker who I greatly enoyed over JB on X-Men.

I still cringe when I hear folks talk about the rich texture Alcala added to Don Newton's Batman art as IMO that was a total mismatch.   From what I've read, the inking freaked him out to no end.

I've also come a long way on Layton over JB.   Loved it as a teen.  I still like it now, but I can understand what JB has mentioned about it & to me it stiffens the art a bit and in places makes it look overly slick.

Hey Brett,

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading your comments on inking. The examples you provided really took me back as well as providing great "illustrations" of what you're opinions.
