As a kid Paul Gulacy's work made me understand the huge difference between being a great cover artist and being a great comic story illustrator. I was enamored with his covers but couldn't get through anything in which he was the interior penciller. So many other skills involved in doing that well.

Looking at those Nick Cardy covers reminds me of another DC cover master -- Carmine Infantino. Loved his covers for the Flash that featured outlandish story elements, in particular, but he also created some classic covers for Superman and Batman.

Gulacy covers are like Steranko covers to me; as much a poster that could stand on it's own outside of the story inside. I would think he'd make a better living doing book covers rather than comics, and perhaps he did those and I'm not aware of it.
