Gorman was very impressive. I heard her yesterday on Morning
Edition. What makes her presentation a poem and not a speech, tho?

The media successfully portrayed a bad president as an absolute monster. Let's see what they can do for Biden.

"Absolute monster" seems awfully f**cking correct for a wannabe dictator that spurred on an overthrow of our government. So, sure, blame it on "fake news".

Good God, am I happy that, yes, that monster is out of office. And, sorry if that bums you out, bro.

"Absolute monster" seems a little generous to me.

Brian, I didn't know it was a poem.

********

She’s the first ever Youth Poet Laureate for the US. She kept talking on
Morning Edition about the poem she would be reciting.

Trump was an absolute monster.

He showed that time and time again.
He was stupid (disinfect our insides?), he was callous
(how many immigrant kids still do not know where their
parents are?), he was a liar (throw a dart, you'll hit a
lie), he was destructive (climate change, world health),
he admired the ways of other callus monsters (Putin,
Kim), and he started an insurrection that aimed to murder
members of the Senate and House.

That's just some of his traits.
I've not included things like his misogyny, racism,
insults, white supremacist beliefs, tax fraud. Need I go
on?

He wasn't just one thing, he was everything. Name it, he
was it. And he didn't hide it, he just surrounded himself
with people that would enable it, until they weren't
useful and then they were gone.

Monster. And one of the most recent examples of someone
who I would call evil. he's not alone in that, there are
plenty of other rulers I would call that, but why was he
singled out so much? Because he was that as head of a
democracy.

One that he tried to steal, by force.

I am surprised to learn in this thread that there are people who did not recognize Amanda Gorman's "The Hill We Climb" as poetry.

The delivery... imagery... rhyme... rhythm...

I loved the poem like everyone else.
Supposedly, there are a couple of Hamilton
references that I missed. I'm going to
have to listen to it again.

Brian M. - Well... it rhymed. But I've long wondered about the difference between speeches and free verse. But I'm not very artistic... I'm kinda colorblind in that spectrum.

Sure was pretty, though.

Quite by coincidence, one of our wonderful teachers is using Amanda Gorman's poem to provide students with an example of anaphora today.

Considering I never knew who she was until yesterday and that I missed hearing that she was a Youth Poet Laureate, which I found out much later, let's ease up a bit on the recriminations and let's just enjoy what she said.
