I like the idea that Jean Grey gained telepathy after a Z'noxx to the head. :^| -(sorry)
The playing in the road death of her friend with first telepathy experience could have been so traumatic that she buried her telepathy deeply for years afterward. Xavier being aware of that slowly helped bring it back?

SO much has to be “buried” with Chris’ retcons. Like Xavier introducing himself to Jean in the first issue. (And do not get me started on Xavier and Magneto visiting young Jean!)

Wow, that is true. It would've been a lot less convoluted just to say that Jean had the latent potential for telepathy, and it eventually came to the surface as she matured.

When Chris and I were working together (and before) he had only read the Thomas/Adams/Palmer issues. Our time together was liberally punctuated by my having to fill him in on details from earlier issues—especially the origin stories, of which he was completely unaware. It was not until just before I left that he read the earlier books.

Chris seemed convinced the Thomas/Adams/Palmer issues were the only ones that really mattered. He had no idea how much of the backstory he wanted to address had been covered in the earlier issues.(He told me once that it was his idea, suggested to Roy, to defeat the Sentinels by having them power-dive into the Sun. Of course, that had been the end [SPOILERS!!] of James Blish's novel VOR.)

JB, you've mentioned before that Mr. Claremont was often inspired by things he had read or seen. How did this impact you as co-plotter? Were you ever left thinking "Geez, I sure am glad there wasn't a slasher movie (or similar) out this month..."?

I’ll relate an amusing story:In 1980 I attended the Chicago Comic Con. Chris was there, too. The show had arranged for a group of us comic pros to attend a performance of WARP, the sci-fi stage show which, among other things, featured costume designs by Neal Adams. When the show ended, I turned to Joe Staton, sitting behind me, and said, in a low voice, “Well, I guess I know what I’ll be keeping out of X-MEN for the next six months!” As if on cue, Chris, on the other side of the theater, stood up and shouted to me “Have I got a plot for you!”

I read that Roy Thomas read a ____load of old Legion Of Super-Heroes comics in preparation for writing what turned out to be less than a half dozen issues of it. Considering he really didn't like that comic, I'd say he more than earned his pay (and as someone who will read them, his issues were notably of good quality).
Having read most of X-Men #1-66, there were some low points in the run, but today how many issues of X-Men would someone have to go through, plus all the spin-offs, to do the same? Possible then, probably not possible now (leaving only a truly fanatical fan as writer, or pulling one of the ever more common start overs out of the hat).
